Last week, the Netherlands was bursting with gorgeous colors as the 4th International Floriculture Trade Fair (IFTF) kicked off on November 6th. Breeders, growers, and traders from around the world descended on the city of Vijfhuizen in order to learn about new products and tools and exchange ideas that will help keep the floral industry thriving.
The fair took place at the beautiful Expo Haarlemmermeer, a massive, state-of-the-art greenhouse that was able to house the more than 300 exhibitors that attended. The doors may have closed last Friday, but this year’s IFTF is being hailed as a major success as 23,241 visitors from 114 different countries passed through the 3-day event.
So what did the 2013 International Floriculture Trade Fair offer those that attended? For many, the Boerma Floral Design Theatre was the highlight of the event because that’s where several magical exhibitions took place. IFTF opened with the International Flower Design Competition which hosted breath-taking floral arrangements with participants vying for the coveted ‘Theo Boerma Cup.’
The Boerma Floral Design Theatre also showcased live demonstrations by instructors of the Boerma Instituut® and other famous floral designers. With 30 years as the only International Floral Design School in Holland, Boerma has a reputation for being one of the world’s best institutions for learning the craft of floristry. The instructors at IFTF were a source of inspiration for attending florists, teaching them innovative techniques they’ll be able to take back to their own shops.
The minds behind the IFTF have even bigger plans for the future. They say, “The next challenge will be to grow the fairs towards the largest horticulture trade event in the world.” They promise an expansion of space and more exhibitors when the International Floriculture Trade Fair returns to Holland in November of next year.
