Often named one of the world’s most beautiful gardens, Mirabell Palace and Gardens can be found in Salzburg, Austria.  The expansive palace was built in 1606 by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau as a token to his love, making it somewhat the Taj Mahal of Austria.

The world-renowned Mirabell Gardens were redesigned around 1690 but wouldn’t be completely remodeled until 1730 by Franz Anton Danreiter.  The garden includes the Pegasus Fountain symbolic of the four elements: fire, air, earth, and water, a massive Hedge Theater, and the Dwarf Garden which features marble sculptures of misshapen creatures.  Interestingly, despite containing some of the country’s finest artistic craftsmanship, the gardens weren’t open to the public until 1854.

Now the Mirabell Palace serves as the location of Salzburg’s mayor and municipal council.  Its massive Marble Hall has also become a hotspot for meetings, concerts, award ceremonies, and is widely considered to be one the “most beautiful wedding halls in the world.”

The Gardens at the Mirabell garnered even more fame after it was featured in the 1965 musical “The Sound of Music.”  It was used as a backdrop for the classic song “Do-Re-Mi,” and tourists have flocked to the locations to see where Maria taught the children by using the steps as a musical scale.

But beyond the wonderful architecture and incredible sculptures, Mirabell is, at a heart, a vibrant garden.  Seasonal annuals are set in grassy beds throughout the entire complex with paved pathways allowing visitors to navigate the fields of flowers.  South of the palace, contained in dozens of marble vases is the Mirabell’s Rose Garden.  It’s flush with countless rose beds blooming multiple varieties in an assortment of dazzling colors.

The whole world is invited to see one of Europe’s most beautiful collections of flowers at the Mirabell Gardens which is open daily from 6am until dusk.
